Security Efforts on the Rise.
"U.S. companies are expected to spend more than $10 billion this year on security compliance alone."
Time is money in any industry, but all the more so in health care where highly skilled professionals - doctors, nurses, researchers, technicians and others as well - are expensive, limited supply resources. Effort must be made in order to optimize their time . Hospitals and labs utilize expensive infrastructure and must optimize the return on those assets.
HIPAA mandates that patient privacy will be safeguarded at all times; that is to say, regardless of the application, access to patient data must always be effectively restricted. Biometrics provide and easy and intuitive method for accountability and privacy when accessing sensitive patient information.
Fingerprint readers require direct contact with a user's finger to function, and therefore are affected by JACO standards. This means that depending on where they are and how they might be used, the readers must be cleaned with an antiseptic solution on a regular basis. If said antiseptic solution or any other solvent, as well as most fluids were to come in contact with internal electronic circuitry within the reader, the reader could fail and stop functioning. This is the main reason for the growing popularity of a new breed of "waterproof" readers, which can not only be safely cleaned at any interval, but may even be dropped into a vessel containing cleaning solution for a more thorough cleaning process. The relatively small additional cost of the waterproof reader can easily be justified when one acknowledges the fact that there are many thousands of people who die in hospitals each year a result of acquiring an infectious disease while being treated.
The traditional Information Technology (IT) solution to this problem is to manage doctor's interaction with all that data using a product category known as context management. Context management programs automatically and simultaneously open all required windows for the doctor to see, based on what he or she is doing at any given moment. This is most definitely a good start. However, all those disparate programs which are called by the context management program must be individually protected with user IDs and passwords. In Health Care, it is by law rather than by choice. This is where a lot of efficiency and ultimately time is lost, as doctors struggle to remember all their passwords and user IDs. Although the information must be protected, it also must be easily and quickly accessible. The corresponding IT solution to this problem is the SSO, or Single Sign On. An SSO program works like a master password that automatically releases saved user credentials - user ID, password- to all the demanding prospective applications. SSO's are great perhaps for convenience, but they do pose one key vulnerability - security - or more accurately and appropriately, the lack of it. If an unauthorized person manages to figure a master SSO password belonging to a physician, he or she is in a position to at the very least compromise HIPAA compliance and break the all important chain of accountability.
